guess who’s finally content with life and not suffering from depression anymore it ain’t me but they out there
Hey guys, can you do me a solid and check out my new role-play group? I’ve been working mad hard on it and it’s a mob themed mature role-play, you can get a blurb of our plot here:
“ For generations, New York city was run by the Diamonds–the family rich in wealth and power. But within the last decade things have begun changing, no longer are they the only ones above the clouds with offices in skyscrapers. The Spades have marked their territory over in Lower Manhattan–while the Hearts have over taken Brooklyn. A time of change is upon the area and a war is threatening to emerge between three and the streets are no longer safe. “
If you wanna see the face-claims and names that are going to be used, click here. We’re going to be releasing teasers daily and then biographies shortly afterwards. Give us a peek, and we hope to see you soon!
So The Antagonists has received mixed to positive reviews (mostly the latter). Which is great! And there are going to be plenty of books in the future and I hope that most of you can stick with me on this journey.
But with that said, I think that we can all agree that the overall story is not quite…what it was going to be. The story is going to evolve into something great and while I’m personally excited for where it’s going to go, I will fully admit that the superhero/supervillain aspect of the story isn’t going to be as prominent as the other aspects. It’s still going to be there; I promise! There are simply going to be other elements. Most of you seem okay with that but…I also kind of want to write a story that’s focused on nothing but people with disabilities with superpowers.
I’ve had this Young Adult Story in mind for awhile now.
It would be called The Defectives.
The story would be set in a city where everyone has a superpower. The children with disabilities are sent to a boarding school as soon as it becomes evident that their disabilities are causing their superpowers to malfunction. The entire point is to lock them away and keep their superpowers from malfunctioning and harming themselves/others. (For example, a boy with anxiety has pyrokinesis that flares up with his anxiety attacks. In other words, whenever he’s really anxious, fires spontaneously start).
The main character of the story is going to be a girl in a wheelchair (I’m remarkably biased) who has telekinesis. She’s sent to the school and at first, it seems like it’s a prison. She slowly starts to enjoy herself as she meets a great group of friends and some amazing teachers who show her how to control her superpowers. She learns how to make it so that the chair itself is floating. It looks like a regular wheelchair but she can take off the wheels and use them as weapons while the chair is still floating in place.
A majority of the book is just going to focus on the school, the characters’ interactions with one another, and the characters learning how to control their superpowers. The climax of the story occurs when (spoilers) a group of the students decide to use their superpowers to take revenge on the people who sent them to the school in the first place.
Once again, it’s going to be a simple Young Adult Story. The plot itself is going to be admittedly simple because I really want to focus on the characters and all of the amazing possibilities of the relationship between the disabilities and the superpowers.
Two questions:
Would anybody be interested?
Does anyone have any ideas for disabilities and related superpowers?
(NOTE: AT NO POINT WILL THE SUPERPOWERS COUNTERACT/CURE THE DISABILITIES. I HATE THAT TROPE.)
So…thoughts?

Okay, I’m getting really excited about this!
I have a lot of great ideas!
Here’s more information:
- The story is going to be called The Defectives
- The school itself is going to be nicknamed Defective Academy. It’s real name is Effective Academy but someone removed the ‘f’ and added a ‘d’ onto the sign years ago. The nickname stuck.
- In the original post, I said that students with disabilities would be sent there when their superpowers start to cause problems. I lied. Well, I didn’t lie, but I have a new idea. They’re just sent there. As soon as it becomes apparent that you have a disability, you get shipped off to the school. There’s a nursery at the school for babies with disabilities. It’s pretty messed up, when you think about it.
- The academy covers Birth - 12th Grade. However, the layout of the academy is very similar to a small college campus. There are dorms, a large dining hall, academic halls, etc.
- I’m still working on names but I have a general description for the characters.
- The main character is going to be a fourteen-year-old girl who was paralyzed in a car accident. The story starts off a few months after the accident so she’s still getting used to being disabled. I’m doing this for several reasons:
- It sets her apart from Minnie (my character in The Antagonists series who was born with her disability).
- It gives her a reason for not going to the Academy until now.
- It allows her to be introduced to the disabled world, which allows for a lot of great commentary.
- It also allows her to have to get used to her disability. And you had better believe that I will focus on it. She has to learn how to move. She probably tips the wheelchair a few times or gets stuck on curbs. She has to learn how to use the bathroom or bathe (Note: The story will be PG. These things will be implied.) She’s going to go through the various stages of grief as she learns how to cope with her disability. And, of course, she has to learn how to use her superpowers.
- A good majority of the story is going to focus on the theme of healing and learning how to overcome obstacles in order to be strong.
- The main character is going to be given a tutor who’s also in a wheelchair and is also telepathic. The guy’s in his sixties and is the wheeling definition of the “hard-ass with a heart of gold” trope. At first, the main character is going to hate him because he’s going to act like a jerk and push her mentally, emotionally, and physically. (He’s going to be in charge of her exercise regimen.) But eventually, the two develop a mutual respect for one another and genuinely care for one another. I hate that I have to add this but their relationship is going to be a mentor-student relationship and nothing more. Well, that’s not necessarily true. He’s going to also slightly serve as the “Congratulations, I’m your unofficial guardian now.” character. He doesn’t go overboard but he does constantly ensure that she’s okay.
- The main character’s going to have two best friends:
- A thirteen-year-old girl who is blind and has the ability to turn invisible.
- A fifteen-year-old boy who has anxiety and pyrokinesis.
- NOTE: The boy has a twin sister who has ALS. She also uses a wheelchair but needs to be pushed. She can barely move and can’t speak. Most of the students think that she’s a lost cause but there’s a pretty cool plot twist in the end.
- There are other characters with a wide range of disabilities and superpowers.
- There aren’t going to be any bullies, per say, but the main character is going to butt heads with another girl who thinks that the main character doesn’t really know what it’s like to be disabled because she was abled for fourteen years.
- There’s also going to be a group of characters who take advantage of the staff’s coddling and use their disabilities to get away with things. It’s going to be fun.
In fact, this entire story is going to be fun!
I’m excited!
Would people still be interested? I’ll write the story anyway but it would be helpful to know that I have some support. Obviously, I’ll bombard you all with new information and excerpts as the story evolves.
Thoughts?
Holy shit i would read the fuck out of this story

ALL OF YOUR SUPPORT IS WONDERFUL! THANK YOU!
Thank you all for the support so far!
This will be one of the last times that I reblog this chain since it’s getting a bit too long. Instead, I’ll post updates, excerpts, ideas, questions, etc. using individual posts. I’ll use the tag ‘The Defectives’. (#the defectives).
Here’s some more information:
- THE SETTING:
- Ace City
- A city wherein everyone has superpowers. (It’s never explained why. It’s just an accepted thing.) The city is bright, loud, and extremely busy. A beautiful beach is nearby. There’s a small restaurant that serves the best chocolate milkshakes.
- Effective “Defective” Academy
- An institution on the outskirts of Ace City. All of the children with disabilities (Aged Birth - 18) are sent to this institution. The campus is surrounded by a massive grey wall with barbed wire on the top. From the outside, it looks like a prison. From the inside, it’s actually a beautiful ‘college-esque’ campus. I’m going to go into extensive detail to describe the well-kempt grounds, the architecture, the layout of the buildings, the color schemes, etc. The institution serves two purposes: 1.) It segregates the children with disabilities from the rest of the city. 2.) It serves as a place for children with disabilities to learn how to control their powers. All of the professors/staff have disabilities as well. The main character is originally going to hate being there, comparing it to a prison. It doesn’t help that she isn’t allowed to leave and nobody is visiting her. In the end, she grows to love the academy and is clad with school spirit.
- The Beach
- The beach serves as the main character’s sanctuary.
- THE CHARACTERS SO FAR:
- (You’ll note that these are slightly different than the above description and I’m bound to make a few more changes.)
- Juniper
- Juniper is a shy, passive, fourteen-year-old. Her superpower is telekenesis. Juniper ‘graduated’ from her middle school at the top of her class. A freak accident over the summer ended up paralyzing her. She wakes up in the hospital and is told that she will have to spend the rest of her life in a wheelchair. Instead of going to high school, she’s shipped off to ‘Defective Academy’. Her old friends and family refuse to visit, effectively abandoning her. She’s originally miserable and scared. A majority of the story focuses on her adjusting to her new life, as well as healing and becoming stronger - physically and emotionally.
- Ryder
- Ryder is the typical hardass with a heart of gold. He’s one of the oldest professors at the academy, as well as the most loathed. Like Juniper, he is in a wheelchair and possesses telekinetic powers. As such, he is assigned to be Juniper’s mentor. Juniper initially hates him (mostly because she’s intimidated by his harsh methods) but when she learns that he truly does have her best intentions at heart, she grows to respect him and even see him as a de-facto guardian figure.
- Skylar
- Skylar is a no-nonsense, tough-talking, trouble-making, fifteen-year-old with autism. Personality-wise, she is essentially Juniper’s opposite. It only makes sense that the two grow to be best friends. Skylar has super-senses (which stink since she also experiences sensory-overload). She fully admits that she uses her disability to get away with things that abled teenagers couldn’t get away with.
- Skorpio
- Skylar’s twin brother. Skorpio’s nose is even cleaner than Juniper’s and though he and his sister have a great relationship, he dreads Skylar’s antics. Skorpio has severe anxiety as well as pyrokinesis (that flares whenever he has an anxiety attack, which in turn causes the anxiety attack to escalate, which causes more fire, you can see why it’s bad.)
- Professor Hakim
- A professor who constantly coddles her students, believing that the best course of action is to be gentle, patient, kind, etc. She constantly butts heads with Ryder over their polar-opposite strategies. It’s implied that there’s some romantic tension there. (As of right now, this is going to be the only mention of romance in the entire book. And even this doesn’t escalate beyond Juniper giggling and telling Ryder that he needs to tell Professor Hakim how he feels. He replies by telling Juniper to shut up and telepathically pushes her wheelchair into the wall probably.) Her superpower is flight though her asthma proves to be an obstacle.
- Professor Kanata
- An eccentric professor with ADHD, who is beloved by all of the students. Her superpower is shapeshifting. She often loses focus and transforms into random animals/people. She spends most of her time caring for her daughter.
- Chouko
- Professor Kanata’s daughter. At first glance, Chouko seems helpless. She is paralyzed from the neck down, cannot talk, and barely responds to stimuli. People often state that she’s brain-dead and a lost cause. Her superpower is the best superpower out of the entire character list and I won’t dare spoil it.
- Nameless characters (at this point):
- A character who is blind with the superpower of invisibility.
- A character with a prosthetic arm and leg which don’t keep up with their super-speeds.
- A character with depression whose superpower is self-liquification (she turns into a pile of goop whenever she’s depressed).
- A character with Tourette Syndrome who can create sonic booms.
- A character with amputated arms whose power is super-strength.
- A character with schizophrenia whose power is mind-manipulation.
- These are just some of the many ideas that I have!
Juniper does not experience a romantic subplot.
The story covers a full school-year (September - June)
The writing style will be slightly different than The Antagonists series.
As of right now, the Expected Publication Date is May 26th, 2016.
I’m going to publish it via Kindle Direct Publishing and am going to look at ways to publish it as a tangible book.
Thoughts, comments, observations, protests, and/or ideas?
*Correction: Skylar is going to be the blind girl who can turn invisible. Sorry about that.

“I think the Defectives is going to be really cool! My only real thought is that a lot of the major characters look like they’re going to be wheel chair users. I mean I totally get it that you, as a wheel chair user would want to see more representation, (I do to, and it’s so great that you’re writing books with disabled characters) but two of your books feature wheel chair users. I do completely understand not wanting to speak from other people’s perspectives though. I’m also a little worried that the main character of the Defectives isn’t going to get her own distinct characterization from Minnie. I’m not trying to lump all wheel chair users together, but other people might, and I really want to see these ladies kick ass separately. . I mean obviously she’s going to be very different from Minnie, but I don’t know. I’m just nervous. After such a smash hit like the Antagonists, I don’t want to see this get over shadowed.”
That’s fair.
But I promise that, even though I’m a novice writer, I feel confident that I have the ability to write two different characters. Just don’t expect me to write three!
The only thing that Minnie and Juniper will really have in common is that they’re females in wheelchairs.
Even then, Minnie’s had a lifelong disability and has been in the wheelchair since she was three. Juniper is paralyzed at the beginning of the story and has to adjust to her new life in a wheelchair.
Physically, Minnie is a twenty-five-year-old black woman with brown eyes and a large cloud of black hair. Juniper is a fourteen-year-old Caucasian girl with blue eyes and long, blonde, hair.
Personality wise, they’re complete opposites.
Minnie’s stubborn, sarcastic, and is constantly trying to push her limits in order to prove that she can do anything, despite her disability. (Which actually causes her to experience a lot of physical/emotional pain.) Her character development comes gradually throughout the series as she tries to prove her strength while realizing that there are things that she can’t do. She also develops as she realizes that the world is not as black-and-white as she once thought, prompting her to have to make difficult choices. She also experiences severe cases of negative character development later on in the series. It’s going to be awesome!
Juniper is shy, passive, and initially miserable/confused because her life as she knew it is over. She always does what she’s told and rarely ever raises her voice. She initially hates Ryder because he puts her through physical/emotional pain. Her character develops rapidly throughout the book as she heals both physically/emotionally, learns how to live her new life, and eventually learns how to stand up for herself and her friends.
I hope that people will be able differentiate between the two and understand that the only real connections between them are their gender and their wheelchairs.
Love this! Boarding school for superheros! I will buy it and read it :D
It sounds amazing I would so read that

OP here with a few important updates!
The Defectives is well underway! I have been posting excerpts, ideas, descriptions, and other related posts using the #the defectives tag.
It should be noted that the relationship between Ryder and Professor Hakim is going to go well beyond what I initially mentioned. Hopefully, that doesn’t bother anyone. It should also be noted that while this is a young adult novel, it does contain swearing (damn, crap, hell, etc.)
If you’re still interested, the novel will be released in May.
I would really appreciate signal boosts so that I can build a bigger audience!
As always, thank you all for your support!
I cannot wait!
OH MY GOSH THIS IS AMAZING THE REPRESENTATION IM IN LOVE
